Exploring the Dubai Design District
The Dubai Design District is a community in the Business Bay area that is specifically designed to house renowned international design, luxury, and fashion brands. Popularly known as simply d3, the district also serves to foster and cultivate budding local talents.
The creative community is said to rival the Meatpacking District of New York and the Shoreditch of London. And during Vision: Dubai Design Week, the district shone under the spotlight as it hosted some of the rising local and international artists, which ran from October 26th to 31st.
In an interview with Vision Magazine, Mohammad Saeed Al-Shehhi, Chief Operating Officer of Dubai Design District discussed in length the entrancing beauty of the local design landscape. According to him, the local design scene takes much of its inspiration from the city itself, and that is what makes it so unique and fresh. The life and activity within the streets of the city give artists boundless inspiration to draw from, not to mention the diverse architecture of the souks and the old architecture in old Dubai. Taking from the artistic soul of the old and traditional settlements and the innovative vision of the new landscape, d3 brings together cultures that are generations apart and melds them together in beautiful harmony.
A Catch-basin of Creativity
The district will serve as a single place where designers and design enthusiasts can come together to inspire and be inspired, to create and recreate, to share and to learn, to grow their understanding of art and to create new forms of it. This is the foundational concept behind the communal design of the district, which features distinct outdoor furniture, covered walk paths, and artistic public areas.
According to its Chief Operating Officer, the design invites local budding artists and designers to mingle with internationally renowned brands and companies to create a thriving environment that encourages creativity, artistry, originality, and innovative thinking. Leveraging the international position of Dubai as a leading tourist hub, the district has already encouraged haute couture brands such as Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, and Prada to set-up shop locally.
“With more than 220 business partners signed up in Phase 1, d3 is looking forward to growing its partner base and the business interest just from this event has been extremely positive,” said Dr Amina Al Rustamani, Group CEO of TECOM Investments in an interview about the Meet d3 event.
And this is just the beginning, per the TECOM Investments CEO.
“We are very excited to commence the second phase of our masterplan development, which is the delivery of the Creative Community scheduled for completion in 2017. This will cover around 1,000,000 square feet within d3, and will act as an incubator for emerging UAE-based designers and artists, as well as providing a natural home for art galleries and studios looking to engage directly with the region,” he continued.
